The Lodge & What We Offer
Otter Bar is a remote, intimate, first class lodge located in California's far northwest corner. We are well known as a premier kayak school and we strive to offer the finest experience available. People come and stay for a week at a time. You can come by yourself or with friends to learn to kayak. You can spend a week's vacation focusing on kayaking and relaxing in a dazzling setting. We will keep you as busy or as inactive as you desire. Regardless of when you come, be certain you will have a highly personalized and exceptional experience.
| While Many Consider Our Lodge Unique, it is Our Location that Dazzles
Otter Bar is intensely remote. We are surrounded by the rugged mountains of the Trinity Alps and Marble Mountain ranges in the Klamath National Forest. We generate our own power, have exquisite private beaches and swimming holes along the Salmon River, a network of walking trails, and a mix of rolling lawns and native forest. There are no commercial establishments anywhere near us. Our region is internationally recognized for its biodiversity, exceptional wildlands, and wild rivers.
| Main Training Pond
Fresh water ponds surround the lodge and are utilized for teaching “rolling” and basic strokes. Water temperatures are usually in the 70’s or 80’s.
| Peter Sturges Paddles on the Salmon River
Otter Bar was started by Peter & Kristy Sturges in 1981 as a small wilderness lodge. Kayaking was something that Peter did just for fun, but it didn't take them long to realize the potential of teaching kayaking at the lodge. The program and the lodge have evolved and grown over the years. And so has the Sturges family: Peter and Kristy's teenage kids, Rush and Allison, are an integral part of Otter Bar.

He has an extensive background in outdoor education and teaches outdoor skills and leads programs at a small university in New Zealand (his other country) in our off-season.
